The Soil Association has designated September as Organic Month with a simple Small Changes/Big Difference campaign to boost organic awareness.
The Soil Association is the UK's largest organic certification body, responsible for raising awareness and certifying over 70% of all organic products sold in this country.
The food that we eat and the clothes that we wear are the last link in a long supply chain. And all along that supply chain are reasons why we believe changing to organic makes sense.
ORGANIC | NON ORGANIC | |
Seedlings | Natural, untreated GMO free seeds | Often treated with fungicides or insecticides. Possible GMOs |
Soil | Healthy soil through crop rotation and natural nutrients from organic matter. | Intensive irrigation and high yields requiring high levels of chemical fertilizers. |
Weed & Pest Control | Insects and trap crops used with some manual spraying of permitted natural pesticides which break up prior to harvesting. | Manual and aerial spraying of chemical insecticides and pesticides. Often leaving residue & inhalation problems for those involved. |
Harvesting | Usually hand picked and natural defoliation by freezing or through the use of water management | Machine picked and artificial defoliation induced with chemicals. |
Shelf Life | Shorter shelf life but enhanced taste and freshness | GMO enhanced shelf life or preservatives present |
Social Conditions | Evidenced and accredited social criteria in place by governing bodies to ensure safe, healthy, non discriminatory environment with living wages. | Often no evidenced or accredited social criteria in place to ensure safe, healthy, non discriminatory environment with living wages so open to abuse of human rights. |
The food on our plate and the cotton in our wardrobe may seem a long way from a hospitalised farm worker in China or polluted rainwater in Nigeria but we’re all connected and our choices make a difference. That’s why we prefer to shop organic.
To help you make a difference we’re offering 20% off and free P&P on all our GOTS certified organic cotton t-shirts for September. Simply enter WTCSOCIAL in basket.
